Advent Rising
Hey All,
This is a game I haven’t played in roughly Four years. I first found it on the discount shelf in Game Stop during my freshman year of College; I believe it was a Tuesday. Ah GameStop’s and college, such an perfect union
, but I digress. I went home installed it and began enjoying it from the start. The game started out by getting us acquainted with universe where the humans existed. They existed on a planet called “Edumea,” and the story starts with you playing as Gideon, the main character, as you pilot a shuttle into your space station, and prepare to meet the alien’s who’s ship has just appeared in Orbit. Edumea was similar to earth, and they apparently had a myth that they had lived on another planet and after an attack they fled to Edumea. But that is enough of the story for now. I played for an hour or two just after installing it and then went back to doing whatever work I had to do.
I had no classes on Wednesdays until 3:00 PM, so I decided to play for a few hours while killing time until class when I woke up the next morning a little bit before 8. I was hooked. I played for a few hours with my roommates coming and going from class, I remember at one point I was starting one level and my roommate, Jay, was leaving for class. He came back a short while later, felt to be about 20 minutes, while I was part way through another level. The conversation went something like this:
“Hey Jay, Forget something? Your Keys?”
“What?”
“Oh was class cancelled you came back pretty quick.”
“Dude I left like 2 hours ago”
“HOLY SHIT, This game has made me lose track of time”
He had left around 11:00 am it was now 1:00 PM and I hadn’t eaten lunch, not even sure about breakfast. So I decided to play another level or two then go grab some food, since I still had 2 hours. I keep playing, my other roommate, Ian, gets back and it’s 2:30 now. I just go “Oh Shit” pause the game, get my shit together, run out the door, and grab food in the café before class.
I tell you about that to just give you an idea how strong the story is for that game, hell it was written by ORSON SCOTT CARD! Now there are some downsides. There are a few glitches, and the controls work well for the most part. The game could have used a bit more time in the oven; it would’ve been solid gold (somewhat like the color of the box), instead of only 14K.
To this day it is one of my favorite games ever, but due to some issues on the console platform it came out on first, it lost a lot of possible sales, and the PC version didn’t do well enough because of the poor Xbox reviews. This was supposed to be the beginning of a trilogy that I will sadly never get to see the end of, but here’s hoping some company see’s the diamond in this rough.
I installed this game recently and lost track of time again over the period of a few days and a few nearly sleepless nights. Even though this game may never get its story finished, I Highly recommend you go and pick it up if you can get past the early 2005 graphics. If you enjoy a story go get this game. You’ll love it.
